Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
Huddersfield
The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival has long been the most important new-music event in the British musical calendar. Over the last quarter century it has showcased many living composers who had previously been neglected in this country, as well as the cream of the world's dedicated ensembles. This year it promises a new look: a new artistic director, Graham McKenzie, took over in January, with a declared aim of widening the programming. To some extent McKenzie has done that - there's marginally less emphasis on hard-line modernism in the 50-odd concerts than there used to be. But with Morton Feldman as the featured composer, Barry Guy as composer-in-residence, and visits from top-quality new-music performers like cellist Frances-Marie Uitti, pianist John Tilbury, and ensembles such as the Australian Elision and Italian Alter Ego, Huddersfield regulars shouldn't worry too much.
