Classes suspended by shooting rampage to resume online from Aug 18

Parents and students return to Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi, on Aug 10 to mourn victims of a mass shooting days prior. Chanat Katanyu

Debsirin Nonthaburi School classes that were suspended following a fatal shooting rampage on Aug 7 have been ordered to resume from Aug 18 but are to remain online until the end of the month.

According to the order signed by school director Nathanapong Thongplap on Tuesday, the teaching suspension prompted by the shooting has been extended until Aug 17 (next Monday). Lessons have been set to resume from Aug 18 but will be conducted in an online format until month's end before on-site teaching begins on Sept 1.

The initial stoppage order followed a shooting rampage carried out by one of the school's students that killed nine people and injured 27 others. Victims included both school staff and students as well as the shooter's own grandparents.

Meanwhile, Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob said he asked video game-related associations and companies to notify the state of players preoccupied by firearms to aid in gun violence prevention efforts. Initial investigations noted the gunman was an avid gamer.

In response to speculation the teen had prepared for the rampage using online material, Mr Chaichanok clarified that the late shooter in the Aug 7 incident had not watched content on the dark web but instead viewed documentaries and conducted searches on gun usage on YouTube.
