Classes for 1st batch begin at AIIMS Madurai

MADURAI: The classes for first year MBBS students at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here began on Monday at the temporary campus in Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital.

With the construction of the buildings for AIIMS at Thoppur in Madurai underway, it was decided to conduct classes at Ramanathapuram MCH temporarily for two years till the construction is complete. Out of 50 total seats at the institute, 35 students from different parts of the country were admitted. The remaining seats will be filled in the next round of counselling.

The students were welcomed by the faculty, and as it was the first day, students and faculty got acquainted with each other. Eight faculty members have been recruited on contract basis for anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, community and family medicine. The temporary campus has smart classrooms, lecture halls, digitised library, practical laboratories, demonstration rooms, dissection hall and separate common rooms and hostels for boys and girls.

Students will be following Covid-19 safety protocols such as wearing of masks and hand hygiene, and instructions given for staying in the hostels. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, has been designated as the mentor institute for AIIMS, Madurai. tnn
