Class review: Circuit at Core Collective

Squat goals: Joe mixes kettlebell swings, sit-ups and bursts on the rowing machine

When and where

Core Collective’s Kensington studio, Tuesdays at 6.30pm.

What’s the drill?

A 45-minute circuits class split into cardio and weights. The instructor, Joe, gets you straight into a quick warm-up, switching between short bursts of cardio on the SkiErg, AirBike and rowing machine, and weight exercises on the floor. He splits you into three groups of six and you rotate round three circuits, twice: think kettlebell swings, dumbbell lifts, press-ups, ball throws and sit-ups with a plate. There’s a yoga-inspired cool-down at the end.

The skinny

Push hard and you’ll leave dripping. Joe doesn’t leave you long to catch your breath between each round.

The social network

The post-work crowd is mostly young professionals and Chelsea types. About 60:40 girls to guys.

Instructor appeal

Joe welcomes everyone at the start and demonstrates each move — don’t be fooled by how easy he makes it look. High-fives all round as you leave.

What to pack

Towels are provided in the changing rooms and corner of the studio. You just need to bring a bottle — there are sensor-activated water refill stations in the lobby.

The sounds

Joe times his playlist to perfection: heavy beats to push you through the cardio sprints; chilled vibes while you’re catching your breath.

Locker-room chat

The bright, airy lobby is so inviting you’ll want to hang out there after your class — think luxe cushioned sofas, giant plants, and Polaroids on the walls. There’s a Core Kitchen café serving deli salads, hot drinks and natural smoothies — pre-order yours before the class. Downstairs, the changing rooms are small but sexy, with shiny brickwork, exposed pipes and #FitnessChangesEverything emblazoned on the mirrors. There are six vast shower cubicles with Malin + Goetz shampoo, conditioner and body wash, and Cloud Nine hairdryers and straighteners. Help yourself to hair ties and recyclable paper bags for your kit. Lockers are smart so you don’t need a padlock.

Tips for first timers

Arrive early — doors are locked once the class has started — and pick a locker in the lobby if you’re already in your kit. Changing rooms can get busy between classes.

The afterburn

Core’s Circuits class is a full-body workout: you’ll leave sweaty but energised and feel it in your arms, legs and core the next day.
