Class review: Boxcon at Blok

When and where

Blok’s Clapton studio, Saturdays at 10.20am. The converted tram depot makes for a cool setting to get your sweat on, with its vintage punchbags and plenty of natural light.

What’s the drill?

A killer 45-minute boxing and conditioning class that is guaranteed to put you through your paces, no matter what your level. The first half of the class takes place on the bag, interspersed with plenty of burpees to keep that heart rate up. The second is a mat-based AMRAP (as many reps as possible) workout with weights. The result is a full-body blitz to leave you buzzing into the weekend.

The skinny

You’re guaranteed to emerge dripping with sweat. Bring a small towel for this purpose alone.

The social network

This class has a loyal following among the Clapton crew — so book in advance and prepare to share a bag. Everyone works hard, though it draws people of all boxing abilities.

Instructor appeal

Caleb will ensure you’re following the correct combinations of jabs, hooks and crosses. He’ll work you hard but his high-energy teaching is infectious and encouraging — you’ll find yourself getting more reps in even when you think you can’t. Declan, Blok’s boxing master trainer, often takes the class too.

What to pack

Bring your own hand wraps — gloves are provided. You’ll also need plenty of water; there’s a tap inside the studio for refills.

The sounds

Generally it’s hip-hop, but occasionally Caleb lets you choose the music genre.

Locker-room chat

There are changing rooms, — though a little compact — stocked with Malin + Goetz products and a café serving shakes and coffees. Reception also sells hand wraps for £5 if you’ve forgotten yours.

Tips for first-timers

Arrive early with your wraps on so you’re ready to head into the studio on time — there’s a tight turnaround with the class before. A few previous boxing classes would be beneficial, but not essential.

The afterburn

You’ll leave on a high and hyped for the rest of your weekend. Be warned: your arms and abs will feel it the next day. The class is addictive so you’ll be back soon.
