Class of 92 begin managerial search as Gary Bowyer confirms Salford City exit

Gary Bowyer has confirmed he will be returning to Derby County following the completion of his temporary spell in charge of League Two side Salford City.

The Ammies, owned by a clutch of Manchester United legends including Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham, saw their season end in disappointment yesterday.

Despite a convincing 3-0 victory at home to Leyton Orient, Salford fell two points short of the play-off spots. City ended on 71 points - two shy of seventh-placed Tranmere Rovers.

Bowyer, who took over following Richie Wellens' axing in March, will resume his role as County's academy manager.

Salford have earned four promotions since the 'Class of 92' arrived at the club, with the ambitious owners targeting Championship football within 15 years of their initial takeover.

Among the names linked with the vacancy are another United legend Roy Keane, as well as Warren Joyce and Sam Allardyce.

Following yesterday's game, Bowyer said on his future: "The agreement was until the end of the season and unfortunately it’s the end of the season, so I’ll be with Derby’s under-23s on Monday night at Manchester United.

“It’s a mixture of emotions, it’s like getting one of those fake lottery tickets. You can’t say ‘it was down to that game’, it was over the course of the season and unfortunately, we’ve just fallen short.

“I think we’ve lost three games since we’ve been here and all three were 1-0 so that shows you how tight the games were and how hard they’ve pushed."

The play-offs will see Morecambe face Tranmere and Forest Green take on Newport County with one of the teams winning a place in next season's League One.
