Clashes erupt between farmers and police in Greece amid protests over EU subsidy delays

Farmers on the Greek island of Crete clashed with riot police on Monday as anger over delayed European Union subsidies escalated.

Demonstrators confronted officers near the Chania and Heraklion airports, throwing stones, damaging police vehicles, and overturning one after officers withdrew.

Police used tear gas as tensions flared. The unrest is part of nationwide protests that have blocked major highways since late November.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged farmers to ease their blockades, saying payments and support would be delivered by the end of December.
