Clarkston Toll Tesco Express evacuated due to gas leak

Three businesses have been affected by a gas leak at Clarkston Toll today.

Tesco Express on Busby Road was evacuated and two other unoccupied businesses properties have been affected.

Engineers have ran safety checks, but SGN say that it is "too early" to state when repairs will be complete.

Engineers are investigating the source of a gas leak on Busby Road.

A source said today that the "smell in the area is so strong" as evacuations were underway.

Waseem Hanif, spokesperson for gas network company SGN said: "We’re investigating the source of a gas leak in Busby Road in the Clarkston Toll area of Glasgow.

"Our engineers have carried out safety checks and have evacuated Tesco Express in Busby Road as a precaution. Two additional unoccupied business properties are also part of the affected area.

"We’re working as quickly and safely as possible to repair our gas network, but it’s too early to say at this stage how long repairs will take to complete."

A gas explosion took place in the same area in Clarkston Toll in 1971, where 22 people lost their lives and more than 100 people were injured.
