Clarks is closing its Swansea Quadrant shop where thousands of kids got their first shoes

If it was time for new shoes for your kids, then it often meant a trip to Clarks in Swansea Quadrant.

Thousands of now grown up kids will probably have memories of skipping upstairs and taking a ticket from the machine to tell you when it was your turn.

Then the nice lady would come over, ask you to take your existing scuffed and worn shoes off, and measure your foot with one of those plastic 'shoes' with the tape measure round. Or, even more excitingly, you'd be taken over to the special machine with the moving metal bits that slid into position around your foot and determined your likely size instantly.

Finally, there was the thrill of wandering round the shop to choose which shoes or boots you'd be rocking next day in the school playground.

But, sadly, it's something the next generation of kids will never experience, as Clarks is shutting down for good in the Quadrant shopping centre.

The news follows Debenhams' announcement on January 25 that it would be closing all it's stores, including its popular branch in the Quadrant, opposite Clarks.

Some other big name brands in Swansea's main shopping centre have also struggled amid the pandemic as coronavirus restrictions have caused store closures.

Clarks has attracted Swansea shoppers for decades. It is not yet known when the store will close, but a spokeswoman for the brand said staff were currently being supported through a consultation period.

The spokeswoman said: "At Clarks, we regularly review our store portfolio to ensure each of our stores meets our customers’ needs as well as our business requirements.

"After careful consideration, we can confirm that our store in the St David’s Arcade, Swansea, will be closing.

"We have a strong duty of care to our employees and will ensure they are fully supported as they now go through a period of consultation.”
