Clark Hunt to serve as drum leader for Chiefs vs. Bills

The Kansas City Chiefs have their drum leader for the AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium against the Buffalo Bills.

Last week they went with a former player, which is seemingly the tradition for the divisional round. It’s becoming clear that they also have a tradition for the AFC title game. Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt will serve as the drum leader when his team takes the field against the Bills on Sunday. In each of the last two seasons, Hunt was also the drum leader for the team during the AFC Championship Game.

There’s a ton of meaning behind the team selecting Hunt as Sunday’s Drum Honoree. The winner of this game lay’s claim to his father’s namesake trophy, the Lamar Hunt Trophy. The Chiefs won that trophy for the first time when they defeated the Tennessee Titans last year.

On Sunday, Kansas City won’t just be trying for a repeat Super Bowl appearance, they’ll be defending the trophy with their founder’s name on it too. For that reason, Hunt is the perfect person to lead fans in this pregame celebration. If they really want to get the stadium pumped up, they’ll play this on the video board too.

The Chiefs have a few other events planned ahead of kickoff on Sunday. Weather permitting, four A-10 Thunderbolts out of Whiteman Air Force Base will conduct a flyover at the end of the national anthem. A Joint Armed Services Color Guard with one member from each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces will present the nation’s colors too. Finally, Brandon Niederauer, a guitarist and Broadway performer, has pre-recorded a version of the national anthem for the game.

All gates at Arrowhead Stadium will open at 3:30 p.m. CT ahead of a 5:40 p.m. kickoff.
