Clarity sought on PM's role

The Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) will ask the Election Commission (EC) to clarify what Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha can and cannot do as its candidate for prime minister in the lead-up to the March 24 general election, party executive Buddhipongse Punnakanta said.

Mr Buddhipongse said the party is already at a disadvantage compared to its rivals because Gen Prayut, as a public office holder, is barred from helping with the party's election campaigns under rules set by the EC and the constitution.

The PPRP will write to the EC to ask for advice on the dos and don'ts for Gen Prayut, Mr Buddhipongse said.

He brushed aside rival parties' calls for Gen Prayut to step down as prime minister so he could debate policies with other parties.

But the PPRP is ready to send its poll candidates to participate in debate forums hosted by media organisations, Mr Buddhipongse said.

He insisted Gen Prayut was the most suitable candidate because, under current circumstances, the country needs someone with strong leadership skills to steer it through problems.

He denied the party was a vehicle to help the regime extend its rule.

The PPRP was established in line with the law and will contest the election under democratic rules, he said.

Mr Buddhipongse on Thursday helped Thanikarn Pornpongsaroj, a PPRP candidate for a Bangkok constituency, canvass for votes.
