Clare football captain Gary Brennan taking a year out

Clare footballers have been dealt another hammer blow for the 2020 season with Gary Brennan deciding to take a year out.

The team captain has been Clare’s outstanding performer over the past decade or so as they’ve moved from Division Four to Division Two and reached an All-Ireland quarter-final in 2016, when the Clondegad man received an All Star nomination.

However, according to the Clare Champion, the towering midfielder has informed his teammates that he will not be involved for the coming season and a source close to the Clare senior football panel has confirmed to Mirror Sport that he will not be involved in 2020.

Clare boss Colm Collins has done a remarkable job with the Banner footballers since taking charge ahead of the 2014 campaign and is the third longest serving manager in inter-county football after Mickey Harte (Tyrone) and Jim Gavin (Dublin).

But this presents the greatest test of his tenure so far as he is also without 2019 All Star-nominated forward Jamie Malone, who is going travelling next year, and Sean O’Donoghue has returned to the US while Aaron Fitzgerald sustained a serious knee injury while on hurling duty for his club Eire Og in September.
