Glasgow Lives: Clara, 25, Kelvinside, postgraduate journalism student

"I did Politics and English in my undergrad at university, and then I worked for the National Galleries of Scotland for about a year and got so bored that I knew I had to do something else and specialise and clarify what I wanted to do in my career.

"I always wanted to write, but I didn’t have much faith in myself, which is ridiculous really, because I’m quite ballsy usually, so I don’t know why I was just settling for a job that I wasn’t happy doing when I should be out doing what I wanted to.

"I started my postgrad at Glasgow University last September. Ideally I’ll be a documentary maker and researcher after university. I write film reviews at the moment too.

"When I discovered I could make documentaries, especially really cinematic documentary films that are really moving, that just opened up the world for me completely.

"I used to skip school a lot and pretend that I was ill, so that I could watch documentary films about political and social issues around the world, and they spoke to my own sense of indignancy, and gave me something to focus on.

"I suppose they riled me up a bit as well, but they definitely inspired me.

"I don’t necessarily want to make documentaries that are the controversial. The more I see of documentary film, the more I want to explore the darkness and sadness that people face in life but find stories of hope.

"I’m interested in the strangeness of the world, in the little places where culture and politics and sub cultures meet. I think those are the stories that make us empathise and stop and think about someone else for a second.

"It’s important to remember that humans are people, who face valid struggles, even if they are not hard hitting news".
