Clapton moped crash: One man dead and another seriously injured in collision following police chase

A moped rider has died after crashing into a van following a police chase in Hackney.

Another man who was also riding the scooter has sustained injuries. He remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The pair had been travelling on the A107 near Clapton Common, north London, when they crashed into the van on Tuesday morning.

They were being chased by an unknown number of police cars after officers responded to reports that the moped had made off following a suspected theft.

The chase ensued after the male riders, believed to be in their late teens, did not stop for the Metropolitan Police. The National Police Air Service was also called to try and stop them.

The moped was first located by police on Stamford Road at 11:45am, but 10 minutes later it collided with the van on Upper Clapton Road.

The London Ambulance Service pronounced one of the men dead at the scene.

The road is still closed to traffic.

The Met said that the Directorate of Professional Standards at the force had been informed of the incident.
