Clapton fire: Huge blaze breaks out in north-east London at block of flats

Dozens of firefighters have been battling a huge blaze at a block of flats in north-east London.

Dramatic footage showed flames ripping through balconies on the residential building in Clapton on Monday night.

People could be heard screaming "get out!" as the fire took hold in Harry Zeital Way.

Parts of the external balconies from the ground floor to the fifth floor were alight, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said in statement as crews continued to fight the blaze.

Crews were called to the fire just before 10.40pm.

LFB said a woman was rescued from the first floor and there were no reports of injuries.

BBC journalist Georgina Rannard reported hearing a large bang as windows exploded on the top floor of the building.

She said residents were being moved further back from the scene behind a cordon as crews continued to tackle the flames.

LFB said it was contacted 67 times about the blaze, which it said was brought under control by just before 1.40am.

Firefighters would remain at the scene into the morning, the fire service said in statement.

It said: "Fire crews from Stoke Newington, Homerton, Bethnal Green, Islington, Holloway, Shoreditch and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."
