Clap for our Carers: North East streets erupt with applause as people show their love for NHS heroes

People across the UK once again joined in with a Clap for Carers tribute, applauding the incredible key workers for their valiant efforts during the coronavirus crisis.

Last week, millions of people across Britain applauded from their homes in a moving tribute to the country's NHS workers.

It's success led to a sequel on Thursday night as people took to their windows, doorways or balconies at 8pm to show their appreciation for all key workers who are keeping the country running following the Covid-19 outbreak.

Teachers, cleaners, supermarket workers and delivery drivers were among those recognised - as well as the NHS staff who are working around the clock.

On Thursday, the number of coronavirus-related hospital deaths in the UK rose by 569 - the highest day-on-day rise since the outbreak began - to 2,921.

The total number of deaths is 24% higher than yesterday, with health officials confirming 33,718 cases.

Clap for our Carers creator, Annemarie Plas, first had the idea after seeing footage of a similar tribute in the Netherlands.

She used social media to spread word of the campaign, with millions of people across the country eventually participating last week.

A Dutch yoga teacher living in London, Annemarie has suggested that the UK continues to clap at 8pm every Thursday throughout the crisis to show continued support for the people working under extremely difficult circumstances.
