Clap for Carers to return this week under new name 'Clap for Heroes'

The weekly Clap for Carers, which lifted spirits up and down the country during the first lockdown, is set to return under a new name.

The woman responsible for the original idea has tweeted that she is relaunching it as Clap for Heroes.

Annemarie Plas, who lives in London, said the weekly clap will go ahead at the usual time of 8pm every Thursday - starting this week.

She said: "We are bringing back the 8pm applause in our third lockdown.

"I hope it can lift the spirits of all of us - carers, teachers, homeschooling parents, those who shield and everyone who's pushing through this difficult time."

The original Clap for Carers ran for 10 weeks during the first lockdown and saw hundreds of thousands of people get involved.

The Thursday-night tradition was celebrated across Nottinghamshire, including firefighters applauding staff outside King's Mill Hospital, the council house being lit up blue, and police officers giving a guard of honour outside Queen's Medical Centre.

Another initiative, started by North Yorkshire mum Mary Beggs-Reid, which went ahead on Christmas Eve, was an idea to ring bells in order to reach out to those suffering with loneliness.
