Clap For Carers Northern Ireland salutes NHS heroes as buildings light up and public applaud health staff

Buildings across Northern Ireland lit up blue tonight as a show of solidarity and gratitude to our NHS workers.

Belfast City Hall, Titanic Belfast and Council buildings across the country were illuminated blue in tribute to the healthcare professionals going above and beyond in their efforts to defeat coronavirus.

The public also pledged their support to the key workers by clapping when the clock struck 8pm with many standing at their windows holding signs and applauding alongside neighbours on doorsteps, whilst maintaining social distancing rules of course.

Some areas even set off fireworks and banged on pots and bans while cheering loudly to praise the dedicated staff of the NHS.

Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill shared a video online as she joined the #ClapforCarers movement tweeting: "Thank you to all the healthcare workers. You’re truly the salt of the earth. Our appreciation of you knows no bound."

First Minister Arlene Foster also showed her appreciation by tweeting a poster which read, "Thank you to our amazing NHS staff."

The Clap For Carers campaign, which started online, was organised because “during these unprecedented times they need to know we are grateful”, according to the organisers.

Belfast Lord Mayor Daniel Baker tweeted: "Tonight we salute those on the frontline risking their lives to better ours. From the bottom of my heart thank you."
