Clap for carers is making a comeback during the new lockdown

As the country enters a third national lockdown, the organisers of Clap for Carers is hoping to bring back the weekly applause for key workers.

Set to return this Thursday at 8pm, residents across the UK are urged to take to their doorsteps once more.

During the first wave of coronavirus, millions came out of their homes and lined the streets to clap, cheer, bang pots and pans in appreciation of NHS workers each week.

Members of the royal family and Prime Minister Boris Johnson also joined in with the show of support.

However, the event was criticised for becoming politicised.

“Without getting too political, I share some of the opinions that some people have about it becoming politicised,” Annemarie Plas, who came up with the weekly ritual, told the PA news agency ahead of the final clap in May.

“I think the narrative is starting to change and I don’t want the clap to be negative.”

The nationwide phenomenon eventually faded out as the pandemic continued.

But now Ms Plas says she wants to bring it back following Monday's lockdown announcement.

But this time there will be a few changes, with the weekly applause now set to be known as Clap for Heroes - in honour of everyone who has been hit particularly hard by the pandemic - including carers, teachers, homeschooling parents and those who have to return to shielding.

“We are bringing back the 8pm applause, in our 3rd lockdown.

“I hope it can lift the spirit, of all of us. Carers teacher, homeschooling parents, those who shield and ALL who is pushing through this difficult time! Please join & share! #clapforheroes.”

The first national 'clap' started in March last year during the peak of the first wave of the virus.

Plas, 37, a yoga teacher from London, asked people to express their gratitude to all carers and NHS workers — from pharmacists to nurses — by opening windows and doors clapping at the same time each week.
