Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 lead says you "can't compare" turn-based and action games, and he loves both "as long as the game is good"

Despite finding massive success with a modern turn-based classic, the director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 doesn't have a preference between action combat and turn-based battles. In fact, he loves both, so long as the fighting itself is attached to a game that's, you know, actually good.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 creative director and Sandfall Interactive CEO Guillaume Broche says as much in an interview with Automaton when asked about whether he has a preference when it comes to RPG combat styles. Having previously gushed over the sword-swinging Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and overlooked turn-based gem Lost Odyssey, his answer probably won't surprise you.

"I don't have a preference, actually," he says. "I think it really depends. Sometimes I can go for either genre as long as the game is good. Sometimes I just want to play a turn-based game, and other times, I just want to play an action game."

What's really important isn't whether a game lets you freely hack and slash like a frenzied brute or makes you stop to consider your next move. What's important is how well any game executes the combat style it goes for, according to Broche.

"When I start a game, I almost don't care if it's turn-based or action, as long as the combat system is tight and the surrounding aspects like the story and characters are good," he continues. "For me, it's like being asked if I prefer pizza or sushi. You can't compare them. I love both."

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's battles definitely follow the classic turn-based mould, but it also requires snappy reflexes from the player to be able to parry enemy attacks or move out the way of a crushing blow. It's a pretty sweet marriage of both styles of gameplay that helped fuel Clair Obscur's historic awards haul.

We don't know what route Sandfall Interactive's next game will take, but after Expedition 33's pretty lengthy development cycle, Broche said he wants to cut loose a little while making the team's second project. "That's also why we want to let ourselves dream again and be creative again. We're going to go a bit crazy."

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director prefers JPRGs to the likes of Skyrim, Fallout, and Baldur's Gate because their linear narratives allow for "a stronger story" and "more memorable characters."
