Claims of 'lack of social distancing' during Prime Minister Boris Johnson's visit to Stapleford

Concerns have been raised over an apparent 'lack of social distancing' by onlookers during a visit from Prime Minister Boris Johnson to Stapleford.

The Conservative Party leader stopped off at the office of the Conservative MP for Broxtowe, Darren Henry, in Derby Road.

The visit to Stapleford on Tuesday (July 28) came on a day when the Prime Minister went to Beeston, to promote new measures to increase the use of cycling.

However, the stop-off in Stapleford led to some concerns.

One reader, who contacted Nottinghamshire Live, and asked not to be named, said: "There was a severe lack of social distancing and very few not wearing masks.

"I did have a mask on and people kept getting close to me as I was at the front and I kept reminding them of social distancing."

Some concerns were also raised over people going into Mr Henry's office without wearing masks. However, spokesman on behalf of Darren Henry MP dismissed some of the claims, saying: “Darren Henry MP and the Prime Minister followed social distancing guidelines.”

Tracy Williams, 51, the owner of Tan-2-Mission, a tanning salon, in Derby Road, witnessed the arrival of the Prime Minister.

She said: "As soon as the word came out he was in the area that's when the crowds started to gather, at the side of the shop across the road.

"There was just a handful of people at the beginning, obviously their workers and people had already arranged to meet him.

"(There were) probably about two or three people standing outside the other shop.

"As I say once people knew he was in (the area) that's when the crowds starting accumulating.

"There was probably about 30 people - obviously they were spread out, there was a little group at the shop at the side of him and then there were people a bit further away and there were other people across the road.

"Most people did do the social distancing - there was a few clusters that probably didn't, that got a bit close to each other."
