Claims Fabian Schar has extended contract at Newcastle as defender speaks

Newcastle United have extended Fabian Schar's contract until 2022, according to reports in Switzerland.

The club triggering Schar's deal is no surprise but Blick reported on Saturday a contract extension has been formally enacted and he will stay at St James' Park for another season.

It follows a pattern of Newcastle retaining most of the players who are out of contract - with Dwight Gayle's new contract to be announced soon and Jacob Murphy set to extend his stay thanks to a clause in his deal.

Schar is currently suspended after his red card against Arsenal but he told Blick: "I'm still happy to be back. I'm fit and in a good mood and I'm really looking forward to the Euros," he said.

Schar was asked by Blick why the Premier League had contributed two clubs to the Champions League final.

"Sure, there is a lot of money available. But now it is being used intelligently by the clubs, the quality in the league is unbelievably high," he said.

"And it's all balanced, even if Manchester City marches out front this year."
