Claimants to receive December Universal Credit payment early thanks to Christmas

This week saw the removal of the £20-a-week uplift of Universal Credit (UC) which was added to payments at the beginning of the pandemic.

With the extra payment now having been removed and causing controversy over the impact it could have on struggling households, there is some good news for anyone claiming UC.

This is because bank holidays can mean that UC claimants receive their payment from the DWP earlier.

These are usually paid in monthly instalments and according to the UK Government's website, if a payment date falls on a bank holiday - including Christmas - then claimants will receive the money earlier.

This year, Christmas falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on Sunday meaning that both Monday (December 27) and Tuesday (December 28) will be official Bank Holidays this year.

And according to the Government's website, anyone who usually receives their UC payment on those dates will get their money on the Friday which falls on Christmas Eve this year.

However, receiving the payment early does mean, similar to receiving wages, that the time until the next payment will be further away and so the money will have to last a little longer.
