Clackmannanshire whisky workers in line for bumper 19 per cent pay rise

Clacks whisky industry workers are in line for a pay rise of 19-per cent.

HGV, forklift and shunter drivers, represented by union Unite, had been involved in a pay dispute with employer Carntyne Transport.

Almost 90 per cent of the company’s Unite members had voted for industrial action in a ballot in December.

But an improved 19 per cent pay offer put to members in a ballot which concluded last Thursday has been accepted unanimously.

The Glasgow-based company, whose clients include spirits giant Diageo, operates from premises in Menstrie, Blackgrange and Cambus.

It also operates at sites in Inverness and Speyside.

Part of the Russell Group, Carntyne Transport employs around 300 workers in total, but the pay deal covers an area of the business involving around 200 workers.

Workers had felt their pay did not match industry standards – or the risks involved in transporting high-value raw spirit.

The pay deal involves a 19 per cent rise on basic hourly pay and there will be a premium on every hour for those working over nine hours a day of up to 35 per cent, representing a basic hourly wage rise increase from £12.60 to £15.00, and after nine hours from £12.60 to £17.00.

The rejected December offer had involved a new rate for HGV drivers involving a basic rate of £14.04 per hour.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This inflation busting pay deal of 19 per cent on the basic pay is a major victory for our members at Carntyne Transport who led the fight for better jobs, pay and conditions.

“This deal is yet another example of our members fighting back and driving-up standards across the logistics industry.”

Unite industrial officer Linda Pollock-Wilson added: “Unite is delighted to secure a massive 19 per cent increase in the basic pay of workers based at Carntyne Transport.

“We have managed to secure a minimum £15 an hour for HGV drivers, which was our objective, and a significant increase for other workers including cask handlers, forklift drivers and shunters.

“This is an excellent deal and demonstrates the power of being a member of Unite.”

Carntyne Transport have been contacted for comment.
