CJ Stander named an 'Honourary Limerick Man' ahead of Munster and Ireland departure

Munster and Ireland hero CJ Stander has been named an Honorary Limerick Man at the Limerick Person of the Year awards.

The South African has lived in the city since joining Munster Rugby in 2012 but in March announced his retirement from the game and intention to return to his native country.

The 31-year-old had previously been made an Honorary International Ambassador for Limerick in 2017.

“It is a big honour for me and my family,” Stander said at the awards ceremony.

“It has been a big, big pleasure living in a lovely city like Limerick.

“Thanks to everyone who made us welcome since day one and thank you for all the support you have given me personally and, secondly, as a team with Munster.”

Stander has scored 42 tries in 153 Munster appearances. The 31-year-old earned 51 Ireland caps since making his international debut in 2016 and won Munster Rugby’s Player of the Year award a record three times. He also represented the British and Irish Lions in 2017.

His off-field memories will live just as long in the memory, however.

“When I arrived I realised, for me anyway, what made Limerick special was the people. I really enjoyed getting out,” he said.

“It started with the Milk Market meeting new people, characters, a new view on the city and then I started exploring a little bit more.

“All the restaurants I’ve been to and the friends has made it special. I’ve more people I know and friends outside of rugby. The people are special.

“That’s why I’ve been vocal about it and I want people to see how nice it is and how cool it is to live there.

“I’m going to miss the people. I’m going to miss the food, there’s a few special restaurants.”
