Civilian weapons-testing expert accidentally shot in the neck at Welsh army firing range

A civilian weapons-testing expert is seriously ill after reportedly being accidentally shot in the neck at an army firing range in Wales.

Quick-thinking troops are said to have dashed to the man's aid before being airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The incident happened at 11am on Thursday (March 25) on a Ministry of Defence Pendine Range firing range in the Llanmiloe area of Carmarthenshire.

Medically-trained Army troops are believed to have administered first aid at the scene.

He is now in a stable condition in hospital.

The accidental shooting happened at the MoD’s Pendine Range, which is run by defence equipment manufacturer QinetiQ, in Carmarthen.

A spokesman for the comapny said: "QinetiQ can confirm that a serious incident occurred on the 25 th March at approximately 11am on the Ministry of Defence’s Pendine Range, which QinetiQ operates in Carmarthen.

"This incident unfortunately resulted in injury to a member of QinetiQ personnel.

"We are co-operating fully with the emergency services and a full investigation is underway.

"It is too early to comment further at this stage, but additional information will be made available in due course once all investigations have been completed."

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said they were called to the scene at around 11.15am on March 25.

She said: "We sent a rapid response car and an emergency ambulance to the scene, where crews were supported by colleagues in the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service on board an air ambulance.

"One person was flown to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff."
