Civilian eyewitnesses yet to be interviewed as part of Garda watchdog’s probe into George Nkencho shooting

Civilian eyewitnesses are yet to be interviewed as part of the Garda watchdog’s probe into the fatal shooting of George Nkencho.

And the 27-year-old’s family are still waiting for a meeting with the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission more than a week after he was killed by officers.

Gardai had responded to reports of a man with a knife at a supermarket and post office in Hartstown, West Dublin, last Wednesday. After pursuing Mr Nkencho to his home on Manorfields Drive, Clonee, he allegedly lunged at members of the Armed Support Unit and was shot at least three times.

The family’s solicitor Phelim O’Neill said they are waiting for confirmation of a new meeting date with GSOC after the first one was postponed. Gardai said the use of non-lethal force, including a Taser and pepper spray, failed to subdue the man.

Meanwhile, a United Nations group for the international decade for people of African descent in Ireland has called on the Justice Minister to set up an independent inquiry.

A GSOC spokesperson said: "The GSOC investigation is ongoing and there are a number of issues yet to be determined at this early stage.

"Therefore we are unable to comment further at this time.

"GSOC would again appeal for witnesses to the incident in the vicinity of Manorfields Drive, Dublin 15 at approximately 1pm on December 30 to contact GSOC at 1890 600 800."
