Civil servants ordered to end WFH and get back to the office

Government staff have been ordered to return to offices “as soon as possible” as work from home guidance was dropped on Thursday.

Civil servants are reportedly being told to get back to their desks to set an example after the decision to scrap Plan B measures.

Boris Johnson announced the plan to drop working from home guidance on Wednesday - seven days earlier than planned.

Data from the Office for National Statistics shows Covid infection rates are falling in most parts of the UK.

Other Plan B restrictions will end next week.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said minister have been told to get their offices ready for the full return of staff.

He added: “Secretaries of State have been asked to ensure all Government offices are open so staff can return to normal working patterns as soon as possible.

“That is also being communicated to Permanent Secretaries.

“Obviously, all employers should continue to follow the guidance to ensure a safe return for all workers.”

The move to end restrictions was welcomed by London businesses after a painful six-week “lockdown lite” that emptied the streets of the West End and City and cost central London’s economy an estimated £500 million in lost trade.

But the capital’s business and political leaders have called for an unprecedented package of measures to help “supercharge” the capital’s bounceback from the worst disruption it has suffered in peacetime.
