Civil rights leader kicked out of theater over disability accommodation

Civil rights leader Reverend Barber kicked out of theater for using his own chair.

In a recent incident that has stirred controversy, a renowned civil rights leader, referred to as Reverend Barber, was allegedly mistreated and forced to leave an AMC theater in Greenville, North Carolina. The incident unfolded during a screening of the movie 'The Color Purple,' a moment that strangely mirrored a scene from the very film.

Reverend Barber, known for his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and his well-documented health issues, brought his own specialized chair to the theater due to his mobility challenges. Accompanied by his elderly mother, the civil rights leader hoped to enjoy the movie without any complications. However, he was confronted by AMC staff upon arriving with his chair.

A heated argument ensued, eventually leading to the involvement of local law enforcement. Ultimately, Reverend Barber decided to leave the premises of his own volition, avoiding any legal consequences. No charges were filed in relation to the incident.

Admittedly upset about the treatment he received, Reverend Barber expressed his disappointment in the theater staff's refusal to accommodate his needs. He emphasized his extensive use of the chair, bringing it to various venues, including the White House, without any prior issues. Speaking about the incident, Reverend Barber stated, 'I've been on broad hair. I've been in the White House with this chair. They've called an officer of the law. The AMC Theater in Greenville, North Carolina, they would not make amends.'

AMC theater management promptly issued an apology for their mishandling of the situation. They acknowledged their CEO, Adam Aaron, has personally reached out to Reverend Barber to express his regrets over the incident. Additionally, they have scheduled a face-to-face meeting with Reverend Barber, to be held in Greenville next week, in order to discuss the incident and the civil rights leader's commendable work over the years.

In the aftermath of this incident, AMC theater management has also pledged to review their policies and procedures. They aim to ensure that similar situations do not occur in the future, by working closely with their theater teams to enhance training and awareness regarding accessibility and accommodation for patrons with specialized requirements.

Reverend Barber plans to hold a press conference to address the incident, shedding light on the incident and possibly initiating a dialogue surrounding the importance of inclusivity in public spaces. The incident has sparked conversations among advocates for disability rights and has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by individuals with mobility issues.

As the story unfolds, many are hopeful that this incident will serve as a catalyst for positive change, prompting a broader discussion on how society can embrace and accommodate the diverse needs of all individuals, regardless of their physical abilities.
