Civil Hospital gets 100 kidney donations, highest in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: Civil Hospital in the city recorded the cadaver donation of a girl on Thursday, making it the 62nd donation of a brain-dead person. It created a record for the hospital with the number of kidneys donated reaching 100. State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) officials said that it is the highest for a single hospital among government and private hospitals in Gujarat.

According to Civil Hospital officials, Nidhi Shrivastav, a resident of Jamnagar, was brought in with head injuries. After four days of intensive care, she was declared brain-dead. Her parents and relatives were counselled about organ donation after which they agreed to donate.

Dr Rakesh Joshi, the medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, said that her kidneys, liver, and pancreas were donated by the family for transplants for needy patients. “Every death is a tragic event for any family, but we only tell them that their loved ones can give a new lease of life in their deaths, and thus organ donation should be practised and promoted,” he said.

Dr Joshi added that the hospital has received 62 cadaver donations from which they have been able to get 195 organs including 100 kidneys. “The donated organs gave new life to 173 patients,” he said.

Dr Pranjal Modi, the coordinator of SOTTO, said that every donated organ reduces the dependency on live donors and that Gujarat has made huge strides in the field over the past few years.
