CHANDIGARH: The MC engineering department has started road re-carpeting works in the city for the current financial year. Initially, only two works were approved and simultaneously allotted. Remaining works will be allotted later. During the current financial year, road recarpeting works worth around Rs 54 crore were approved and around 11 separate tenders were received for these.
Out of the two works allotted, one is in Industrial Area, Phase I. Work on this has started while it is yet to start in Industrial Area, Phase II. Cost of the work at Industrial Area, Phase I is around Rs 5 crore, while the one in Industrial Area, Phase II has been allotted for around Rs 7 crore.
“Work has been started as weather is favourable with good heat and dryness. This is the best time for road re-carpeting. Work will not be done when it rains or during the monsoon. Road recarpeting in Industrial Area had been pending for a long time. It was a priority for us due to the constant demand. That is why it was started first,” an official said.
Sources said the engineering wing of the civic body authority has planned and prepared a road network of 431 kilometres, which will be re-carpeted in the current financial year. These comprise roads of all city divisions, sectors, commercial areas and parking lots etc. Work is being done under the supervision of senior engineering officers to ensure that norms laid down are followed.”
The issue of road re-carpeting works was also discussed during recent meetings of the MC general house, where municipal councillors demanded recarpeting of roads in their respective municipal wards and areas. The roads were identified earlier and tender works were prepared accordingly.
