Citywest refugee centre evacuated as Department clarify speculation

The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth clarified the circumstances surrounding an evacuation of the Citywest refugee centre earlier today.

Around 500 people were evacuated from the premises at around 2pm today. It was due to a fire drill taking place in the accommodation quarters.

Local speculation surrounded the incident and the Department sought to clarify the circumstances. They also confirmed that those returning to the centre were ID'ed and verified.

A spokesman for the Department told Dublin Live: "A fire evacuation drill took place at the accommodation quarters of the Citywest Transit Hub at 14:00 today. An estimated 500 people were evacuated from the building in line with safety regulations and best practice. As people re-entered the Hub’s staff checked their ID and verified that they were assigned a place within the Hub."
