Citymapper launches unlimited London travel pass

Transport app Citymapper is to launch a London travel pass ( Citymapper )

Transport app Citymapper is set to launch a London travel pass that could offer cheaper fares than Oyster.

The new Citymapper Pass is a subscription service that will offer unlimited travel via any mode of transport, and the first city for the roll-out of the new pass is London.

In London, the pass will initially cost around £40 a week for unlimited travel on the Tube, buses and Overground in zones one and two, as well as unlimited use of Santander bikes and £12 towards trips with the company's Citymapper Ride cab-sharing service.

A cheaper option, priced at around £30, will offer unlimited zones one and two travel but exclude bikes and cab rides. A London zones one and two Travelcard on Oyster currently costs £35.10 a week.

A Transport for London spokesperson told the Evening Standard: “Citymapper have now confirmed that we will be paid the existing fares as usual for all journeys on our services as part of their proposals for a subscription service bundling together a number of transport options.”

The pass will be available as a physical card in the same Citymapper green, or it will be available via Apple and Google Pay.

In a Medium post outlining the thinking behind the new pass, Citymapper said: “We believe ease of ticketing is essential for public transport to compete with private players, and this is important for the future of congested and complex cities.

“But we’re developing a more complete and tailored experience for regular commuters: all transport integrated in one place, personalised, with a comprehensive app they use every day.”

Citymapper added that it will continue to add new partners and transport networks to the pass, as well as look at expansion into other cities. The pass will launch in March or April.
