City worker fined £1,500 for rage at woman eating boiled eggs on a commuter train

A worker has been fined £1,500 after she launched an "aggressive" tirade at a commuter who started to eat boiled eggs on a train.

Samantha Mead, 50, became agitated from the stench and began to "imitate" Erika Stoter, a court heard.

The woman moved "quickly and aggressively" towards Ms Stoter as she began to eat her breakfast on the 6am Greater Anglia service from Chelmsford to Liverpool Street.

The jury at Blackfriars Crown Court heard that Mead gave the victim, who is originally from South America, "bad" looks on the journey of September 6, 2018.

"The woman asked me if I spoke English and I said no because I was scared and confused. I thought she would stop ...she said, 'You are disgusting'," Ms Stoter said.

Mead then threatened her and asked if she wanted to go outside, the court was told.

Ms Stoter replied to the defendant: "Don't you think you are quite old to be doing these kind of things?"

When questioned in court about why she eats eggs in a public place early in the morning, she said: "I have to eat at that time because of my diet."

Ms Stoter reported the incident to police after getting off the train in London.

Mead was then questioned by police four days later on September 10 after Ms Stoter reported seeing her on the train again.

Mead, from Essex, told jurors that she was taking tablets for a medical condition and the smell of of the eggs made her feel nauseous.

On Friday, the city worker was found guilty of one charge of intentionally causing harassment, alarm or distress.

Mead was fined £750 and ordered to pay £750 in compensation.
