Sept. 15--At least three people were killed, two of them Sunday night in the Gresham neighborhood on the city's South Side, and at least 29 were wounded in shootings across the city over the weekend.
The shootings bring the year's total to at least 2,114, according to an analysis of a Chicago Tribune database on city shootings. That's an increase of more than 300 over last year and more than 450 over 2013, according to Tribune data.
The city has also seen more killings, according to a Tribune database on homicides. There were at least 350 slaying victims through Monday morning this year, 50 more than last year and 32 more than 2013.
The two homicide victims Sunday were killed within the span of about 2 1/2 hours, at about 6:53 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. They were less than a mile apart in Gresham, which also saw two other shootings, both nonfatal, earlier Sunday.
The two men who were killed in Gresham were:
--Ashton Simpson, a 36-year married, father of three who worked two jobs. Family members said he had just returned home from a trip to the grocery store with his wife about 9:15 p.m. when he heard gunshots and went outside to investigate. He ended up shot three times, in the face, chest and arm, and was pronounced dead on the scene in the 8300 block of South Wood Street.
--Akim Gaddis, 19, of the 8400 block of South Loomis Boulevard. He was shot about 6:55 p.m. in the back in the block in which he lived and later died at Advocate Christ Medical Center.
The two other shootings in Gresham were at 5:08 p.m. Sunday in the 8800 block of South Racine Avenue, where a 23-year-old man was shot, and at 5 p.m. Sunday in the 8900 block of South Union Avenue, where a 24-year-old man was shot.
Sunday was the most violent day of the weekend, with at least 16 shooting incidents resulting in at least the two deaths and 18 more people being wounded between midnight Saturday and midnight Sunday.
