City region passes 4,000 Covid deaths in sad pandemic milestone

More than 4,000 people have now died of Covid-19 in the Liverpool City Region since the start of the pandemic almost a year ago.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show the city region’s weekly death toll fell again in the second week of February, recording 181 deaths in the week up to February 12.

But while this is the second week in a row that deaths from Covid-19 have declined, it brought the region’s total death toll for the crisis to 4,184 once additional deaths from previous weeks were added in.

These figures record all deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, meaning it was either the main cause of death or a contributing factor.

Several city region boroughs also passed significant milestones during the second week of February.

In Liverpool, there have now been more than 1,300 deaths from Covid-19, including more than 1,000 deaths in the city’s hospitals.

During the week up to February 12, Liverpool recorded 37 deaths from the virus. This was a significant decrease compared to the previous week, when there were 62 deaths.

The same week saw Sefton pass 800 deaths and Wirral pass 900 after recording 42 and 40 deaths respectively.

Sefton’s care homes are a particular concern, recording nine deaths for the third week running.

St Helens, Knowsley and Halton all recorded lower death tolls than the previous week, but Halton’s only decreased by one from 16 to 15.

These figures mean that 1,217 people have died of Covid-19 this year already - more than a third of last year’s total.

However, the ongoing decline in infections and the success of rolling out the coronavirus vaccine give some hope that this will be the last significant spike of the crisis.

Studies have already shown that the vaccine is effective in reducing serious illness and death from Covid-19.

Below are the deaths from Covid-19 for each borough recorded in the week up to February 12, with the total death toll for the crisis in brackets.

Halton - 15 (281)

Knowsley - 17 (381)

Liverpool - 37 (1,310)

St Helens - 30 (477)

Sefton - 42 (816)

Wirral - 40 (919)
