A former City of London Police officer who stole £50,000 in cash and harassed his girlfriend has been added to the industry’s barred list.
Christopher Trowton pleaded guilty to harassment and burglary at Kingston Crown Court in February 2025 having been arrested and charged by the Met Police in 2022.
He resigned from the City of London Police in June of that year, and last December was sentenced to 43 months imprisonment for burglary, 21 weeks concurrent for harassment and was issued a restraining order for 10 years.
Following a misconduct hearing held on May 12 Mr Trowton was found by City of London Police Commissioner Peter O’Doherty to have breached the professional standards of “courtesy, honesty and integrity” and to have engaged in gross misconduct.
Commissioner O’Doherty wrote that Mr Trowton had brought the force into disrepute as a result of his crimes, and that while he had already resigned, it would have been “untenable” for him to have continued as a police officer.
He wrote: “In making my decision I have had regard to the guidance issued by the College of Policing on outcomes in police misconduct proceedings.
“I have considered all relevant documents including any mitigations and responses you may have made. However, your criminal conviction and associated custodial sentence undermines the trust and confidence that the public are entitled to place in police officers.
“Although you have resigned from the police service, having considered all of the circumstances, I am satisfied that the conduct amounts to gross misconduct.
“The seriousness of the offence and the resulting criminal conviction would make continued service as a police officer untenable. In order to maintain public confidence and uphold the integrity of the police service, the appropriate and proportionate outcome would have been dismissal without notice. I therefore find that you would have been dismissed and direct that your details be placed on the barred list.”
Mr Trowton will be able to apply to be removed from the College of Policing’s barred list once five years have passed.
Detective Superintendent Thomas Hill, Head of the Professional Standards Department at the City of London Police, said: “In December 2025, former City of London Police officer Christopher Trowton was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for burglary and harassment.
“An accelerated misconduct hearing was held on May 12, 2026 at which it was determined that had he still been a serving police officer, Trowton would have been dismissed. His name will be placed on the barred list to prevent him from obtaining any future policing role.”
