Due to a proposal by Jacksonville mayor Lenny Curry, the city is currently seeking to issue TIAA Bank Field $2.2 million for updates and repairs. The proposal comes as the Jags are set to have their first full slate of home games since 2012.
If approved, the Jags will look to specifically make repairs to the stadium’s aging drainage system, elevators and escalators and install new LED lights. Curry proposed that the potential upgrades be paid for through the city’s general fund, a great bit of which is compiled by the money of local taxpayers, per the Florida Times-Union.
Curry also requested emergency legislation which could speed up the voting process and get things moving in two weeks. The reason for that is because the Jags may want the upgrades before the start of the season. That could be anywhere between August 13-17 as their first preseason game (against the Carolina Panthers) has yet to be determined.
This pending move comes while the city — like the rest of the nation — is dealing with an uncertain economic future due to the coronavirus. Voting could come as early as May 26.
