Edinburgh council set to approve new apartments despite road safety concerns

The City of Edinburgh Council have given new luxury flats the go ahead despite local fears over road congestion.

The council’s development committee look set to approve the plans for a new residential development comprising 16 flats with associated car and cycle parking, infrastructure and landscaping.

The proposal from Cruden Homes was for 16 new-build flatted residential units for affordable housing as part of the wider masterplan for the former Agilent Technologies site in South Queensferry.

The proposed development is a mix of three bedroom family units and one bedroom properties on ground level.

The site is located eight miles to the North West of Edinburgh City Centre on the shore of the Firth of Forth between the Forth Bridge, Forth Road Bridge and the Queensferry Crossing.

However, over 100 local residents lodged objections to the planning application online, citing concerns about road traffic, particularly near the local school.

One said: “The housing estate surrounding the proposed development already suffers from significant traffic flow and overuse of parking areas. This would be exacerbated by the addition of the proposed 16 flats.

“The existing residential area within which this development is planned has a high population of young children and residents are already concerned with the high volume of traffic passing through and presenting a real road safety risk to children playing and en route to school and nursery.”

Another resident added: “This will cause more issues to the already congested access roads largely caused by parked cars. I work in this area and struggle enough with the congested traffic early hours of the morning without adding on to it.”
