A Westbury-on-Trym teenager “lost control” as he sped on a roundabout while drunk.
Angus Wight, of Westover Gardens, drunk-drove his silver Ford Ka down Westbury Road on March 19.
The 18-year-old received a 12-month driving ban yesterday (August 18) at Bristol Magistrates’ Court, after admitting drink-driving.
Wearing a smart white shirt in court, the City of Bristol College student said he had got “too cocky”.
Prosecutor Laura Opie said: “It was about 3am and police were on patrol when they saw a car being driven erratically.
“It was speeding, and the driver lost control as he went round the roundabout.
“Police stopped the vehicle and found the defendant had a small amount of cannabis in his bag.”
Wight had 42mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.
Representing himself, he told the court: “It was just stupid. It was late at night and I got too cocky. I took the car and I should have left it.”
Deputy District Judge Kevin Hill asked Wight: “What do you do with yourself?”
The defendant replied: “I’m going to Bristol City College to do my A-Levels, because I kind of wasted two years in college.”
DDJ Hill said: “Oh dear. So you’re starting again?”
Wight replied that he was, and said he could get by without a car.
“I will just get the bus,” he said.
When told he could take a drink-driving course to shorten his ban, Wight asked: “Nothing bad’s going to happen if I don’t end up doing it?”
DDJ Hill said: “No, not at all.”
Wight lives with his mum, who is supporting him financially.
“Other than that I have no income, but I’m applying for a bursary for college,” he said.
DDJ Hill ordered Wight to pay a £100 fine, £32 victim surcharge and prosecution costs of £85.
He told the defendant: “If you do drive, it's a serious offence and you would be in breach of an important court order.”
