City man stopped near Channel Tunnel named in alleged cocaine importation ring

A Liverpool man was charged with being part of a large-scale drugs supply operation after being arrested near the Channel Tunnel.

National investigators swooped on Christopher Mealey on Saturday.

The 44-year-old, from Liverpool, was arrested and quizzed by officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA), the UK's leading law enforcement team.

Cash totalling £19,000 was also discovered in a vehicle, the NCA said.

It happened in Cheriton, Folkestone, Kent, where the British terminal for the Channel Tunnel is located.

Today, the ECHO can reveal how Mealey was charged with being concerned in the fraudulent evasion of prohibition on the importation of a Class A drug.

That is said to be under the Customs and Excise Management Act.

He appeared before magistrates and will next appear at Maidstone Crown Court for a date yet to be fixed.

Mealey is from Liverpool, although he is listed as having no fixed address.

Three other people were also charged in connection with the alleged importation of cocaine, but detectives are so far withholding those details.
