City landmark dismantled to make way for new road scheme as council says it will be moved

Council chiefs have moved to reassure people left concerned after a famous Liverpool landmark was taken away as part of major city roadworks.

The iconic Salvor ship mast was taken down and removed from its popular waterfront spot on the Strand, close to the junction with Chapel Street.

The historic mast featured in early pictures of The Beatles in Liverpool, after they took part in a historic photo shoot on the ship it comes from in September 1962.

Launched in 1947, The Salvor was a salvage ship which operated on the Mersey until 1978, with its mast subsequently being installed on the roundabout near the Liver Building.

Now the mast has been taken apart and removed as part of a huge revamp of the Strand, with some on social media worrying it was set to be scrapped.

But the council has revealed its future plans for the mast - and said a location will be found for it.

A spokeswoman for the local authority said it has been taken down and placed in a safe space while highway improvements are carried out.

A new location for the mast has not yet been decided.

The spokeswoman said: “The Salvor’s ship mast has been taken down and placed safely in storage due to the highway improvements being carried out on The Strand which include changes to the area where it was located.

"A decision has not yet been made on where it will be relocated to.”

Central Liverpool Councillor Nick Small tweeted: "The Salvor’s ship’s mast at St Nicholas Place has been removed as part of the Strand scheme, which will see new public realm created with a new home for the iconic Superlambanana.

"The Salvor’s mast is being stored safely until a new location can be found. Suggestions welcome."

People have already had ideas on social media about its relocation.

Seán Robertson tweeted: "Couple of ideas: 1. The roundabout on Mann Island by the Museum of Liverpool.

"2. The walkway alongside Salthouse Dock."

"3. Once it (eventually) gets built, as you approach the new cruise terminal."

ShareTheCity posted pictures of the Beatles in front of the mast, adding: "Salvor's mast is a fine piece of Liverpool's maritime world heritage, and a link to the best Beatles band photos taken in the city.

"It's worthy of a good relocation."
