Work has started to replace a footbridge at a busy Belfast train station as part of a £400,000 project.
A modern pedestrian bridge will be erected to replace the existing facility at City Hospital Halt, which Translink say will help to maintain easy access from the halt to the City Hospital and the Donegall Road .
Contractors are due to arrive on site this week, with the work scheduled to be completed in January 2020.
The erection of the new bridge is scheduled to take place during a three-week period at the end of this programme. Access to the existing bridge will continue until this time.
New bridge supports will be constructed in the interim period, which will require some limited night-time work, with some off-peak lane closures on the Donegall Road.
Translink said members of the local community will be kept informed of this in advance.
Access will remain to and from the station throughout the working period, with an alternative route provided for passengers during the three-week period when the bridge will be unavailable – all passengers should allow a few extra minutes for their journey as a result.
There will be no planned disruption to any scheduled rail service as a result of these works.
Helen Halliday, Translink Project Manager , said: This is an important project, intended to enhance the passenger experience at City Hospital Halt, one of the busiest on the NI Railways network. Some night works will be required, but every effort will be made to keep noise and disruption these to a minimum.
"After preliminary works, the existing bridge will be removed and be replaced by a new structure, with the project taking a number of months to fully complete.
"We look forward to working with our contractor, GRAHAM, to deliver this project as we continue our journey to make public transport ‘first choice for travel."
