City could be wiped off map as huge crumbling dam looks set to collapse

An entire city is waiting to see if it will be wiped off the map by a huge dam that looks set to collapse.

Just four months ago, 270 people were buried alive by a thick layer of mud in Brumadinho, Brazil, in the country's worst ever mining disaster.

Now there are fears a similar disaster could strike again at the Gongo Soco mine and the Sul Superior dam just one mile away.

A hastily assembled civil defence headquarters has been set up in Barão de Cocais, as nervous locals wait for news.

Mining company Vale, which owns the complex, warned last week that the embankment could collapse at any time this week, the BBC reports.

José Ocimar of the civil defence authority said: "The wall of the Gongo Soco mine could rupture any day.

"That could create an impact and a vibration which could trigger the collapse of the dam below.

"We can't be completely sure of what's going to happen but we're taking the necessary precautions to prevent the loss of human life."

Hundreds of people living nearby have already been evacuated as 30,000 people live in the path of the potentially deadly mudslide.

In the worst-case scenario, Barão de Cocais would have about one hour and 15 minutes to evacuate.

The town carried out a drill in recent days, clearing every street in just 50 minutes.

Brazil's Mines and Energy Minister, Bento Albuquerque, has said there is no safe damn in his country, the Rio Times reports.

He said that by the end of 2019 all dams in the country will be monitored and by 2021 all will be decomissioned.

He added that the breach of the damn in Gongo Soco is likely to occur on Saturday, May 25.
