City Circus: Huge programme announced as UK's biggest contemporary circus returns to Bristol

The UK’s biggest festival of contemporary circus is returning to Bristol for the first time since 2019.

City Circus 2021 will present a programme of indoor and outdoor live performances from September 30 to October 16.

The biennial event will host an international line-up of ticketed and free indoor and outdoor events combining circus skills with music, film, theatre, dance and more.

On Friday, October 8 and Saturday, October 9, Circomedia will present Luminosa, a feel-good show featuring aerial dance, expert juggling, tipsy hoop swirling and more.

On the following weekend, from October 15-16, Kerfuffle will offer up a "jukebox cabaret of camp classics for queer folk and their friends" at The Mount Without on St Michael's Hill.

And on the same dates will be the world premiere of (Le) Pain, in which the award winning French acrobat Jean Daniel Broussé will share the comedy and tragedy of bread-making and what it is like to escape the confines of family tradition and strait-laced provincial life.

Festival director Kate Hartoch says: “In all, we’ll be presenting 35 performances by artists from all over the globe and offering everything from suggestive satire and stark social comment to family fun – all interwoven with audacious circus skills.

“Many of the shows are new and by artists and companies we’ve been supporting throughout lockdown – a period that’s been particularly harsh for freelance arts workers.

"The result, we feel, is a city-wide programme that is relevant, engaging and hopeful and which contains something of appeal to all ages and interests.”
