City centre unit still empty a year after getting alcohol licence

A Bristol city centre unit remains empty more than a year after an alcohol licence was granted for the site.

The ground floor of 28 Baldwin Street has a notice on the windowfront, outlining an application to Bristol City Council for the right to sell alcohol on-site from 8am to 12.30am each day of the week.

The council has told Bristol Live it approved the licence on June 18 last year. But the interior of the unit remains visibly unfurnished.

The landowner, Westcoast Developments, made the application with the intention of a restaurant opening at the site, according to the notice at the front.

Westcoast bought the building in 2015 to turn the upper floors into 53 flats, ranging from one to three bedrooms.

A poster on the windowfront advertises a 7,700 sq ft "leisure opportunity" for let. Another reads: "To let, shop/office, 485 sq ft."

There is also a sign advertising "secure allocated car park spaces for rent" at £50 per week.

Bristol Live has asked Westcoast for an update on its plans.

We reported last week on a London-based retail consultancy ranking Baldwin Street the second worst high street in Britain — and reactions of bafflement from the street's traders.
