Traffic chaos left a major city centre road filled with tailbacks tonight after the Strand was closed during rush hour.
Drivers were diverted away from the busy route that is currently undergoing major works between Leeds Street and Hanover Street..
The main road is currently undergoing a massive £22m upgrade to reduce congestion and improve safety and air quality across Liverpool city centre.
The work, which should be completed by spring next year, is part of a much larger plan to overhaul the city centre road network.
Over the past few months it has been a building site as work has taken place to transform it as part of a "radical eco-friendly redesign."
To facilitate the work, Liverpool City Council issued a reminder to people who use the route that it would be closed overnight on Wednesday.
Road closures were put in place at around 7pm between Great Howard Street and Chapel Street.
It will not reopen until 5am on Thursday.
The council said: "Reminder: A section of The Strand from Great Howard/Leeds St junction & Chapel St will be closed tonight.
"The southbound c/way will be closed from 7pm - 5am this evening into tomorrow morning.

"Diversions will be in place."
Pictures taken on the Strand showed queues of traffic waiting in the area while hundreds of cars were diverted around the city centre.
