City centre street partially closed after discovery of dangerous stonework

A city centre street is closed to traffic in one direction following the discovery of a masonry defect in a building there.

An 'exclusion zone' was placed around the shops in Port Street since yesterday (Friday) after a member of the public reported defects in the stonework above the Let's Party shop.

Following investigations, Stirling Council staff closed the road to traffic travelling towards St Ninians. Vehicles coming in the other direction were unaffected.

Businesses in Port Street, including Let's Party and surrounding shops, remain open for business.

Writing to business and residents in the surrounding area, the council's service manager for economic growth, culture, tourism and events, Steven MacDonald said: "At this stage we estimate the safety zone and restrictions may be in place for four weeks taking account of the Christmas period."

For full details and reaction, see Wednesday's edition of the Stirling Observer, which will be in shops on Tuesday because of the Christmas period.
