City centre shops and hotel turned into 1960s scene for spy thriller filming

Liverpool was transformed into a 1960s London featuring an old Odeon cinema, guitar shop and hotel.

It is believed film crews were preparing to shoot scenes for ITV's new British spy drama, The Ipcress File.

The Ipcress File is an espionage thriller set in Berlin and London during the 1960s.

Len Deighton's novel has been adapted into a six-part television series for ITV starring Joe Cole in the iconic role of Harry Palmer alongside Lucy Boynton and BAFTA award-winning actor, Tom Hollander.

Today, production crews were on North John Street creating a 1960s backdrop for the show.

Unit Six Barbers became an old-style Odeon Cinema, with paper signs and picture billboards.

Music Notes transformed into a clothes shop, complete with mannequins, while Natterjack Running was turned into a guitar shop.

Z-Hotel was the final building to be made over. The hotel was renamed 'The Kenbourne Hotel' and outside a red carpet could be seen.

The Ipcress File was Len Deighton’s first spy novel introducing the iconic British spy Harry Palmer and set against the backdrop of Cold War Europe

To date, the novel has sold 10 million copies worldwide since it was first published in 1962.

ITV Studios are providing significant financing, with other co-financiers comprising of the Liverpool Film Office, Lipsync, Filmgate and the Finnish National and Regional Funds, with Cofiloisirs Bank cash flowing.
