City centre shopkeeper 'taken to hospital' after incident

A man was taken to hospital after a police incident at a city centre newsagents.

The emergency services were called out to Richmond News on Richmond Street earlier this evening following reports of an incident at the city centre newsagents.

A worker in a nearby shop told the ECHO that he heard 'shouting' inside the newsagents before the emergency services arrived at the scene. He said he saw a worker from the shop being taken into the back of an ambulance.

A member of the shopkeeper's family said that the worker had been taken to hospital with shock. The man was not thought to have suffered any serious physical injury.

Police put a cordon in place around the shop, and the incident disrupted some travel services. Stagecoach tweeted: "#Birkenhead Please be aware all cross river services are currently running a delay due to an ongoing police incident in Whitechapel in Liverpool city center, sorry for any  delays caused.@Merseytravel"

The cordon was lifted at around 8.15pm. The ECHO has approached Merseyside Police for a comment.
